This property is not hooked to the electrical grid. However, it is fully powered by Solar Electricity and Propane. It has just about all the comforts of home except in a sustainable, off-grid setting.
Since this is an off-grid property, we do what we can to conserve electricity.
- For that reason we do not have air conditioning. That said, the cottage is very well insulated and stays relatively cool. There is also just about always a nice breeze on Barrie Island. Opening windows and doors can provide a nice cool living area as well. We have added a solar exhaust fan to the second level to help remove any hot air that gets trapped up there.
- We also do not have a microwave. There is a propane oven and BBQ that can be used to warm things up.
- There is no plug in Coffee Maker but don't worry!!!...There is a stove top percolator and a French press that both do the job nicely!
Unfortunately, there is NO WiFi internet. However, there is a cell signal booster installed that gives you great reception. We also have a Smart TV that you can hotspot your phone to that is already preloaded with all major Streaming services.
The main cottage has 2 bedrooms. The Primary bedroom has a Queen bed and the 2nd bedroom has Twin Bunk Beds. There is also a Pull Out Couch in the Living Room.
The Bunkie is beside the cottage about 30 feet away. It has fantastic views of the lake as well as both the sunrise and sunset. It has a Queen bed in the loft and space for air mattresses on the main floor.
No, the water from the tap is from the Lake. It is pumped into a 1500 gallon cistern and the cottage draws water from there. Drinking water will be provided.
It is certainly an inconvenience, but the good news is that you are right beside a virtually unlimited supply of water (the lake!). If you run out there is a reserve tank that will last 2-3 days that you can open up and the cottage will draw from there. You will then need to text/call us and we will have someone come and fill up the main cistern.
With moderate use, there is enough stored water to last more than a week without being filled up. If you want to use more, go for it! We can stop by during your stay to fill them up again.
Again, this can be an inconvenience, but its all part of the adventure! The good news is that there is a generator on site that at the push of a button (from inside the cottage) will turn on and charge the solar batteries. You will have power back within seconds!
